Shipping in Changing Climates
Shipping in Changing Climates is a recently initiated research project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (£3.5m funded for 3.5 years) and a number of industry partners. The SCC project seeks to understand the scope for greater energy efficiency of the supply side, understand the demand side drivers and understanding the supply and demand interactions in shipping. The multi-university, multi-disciplinary systems research project will use ‘big data’ sources such as the Satellite AIS data, ship level smart data, to which the consortium has unparalleled access aswell as combining quantitative with qualitative research methods in which the consortium has a solid background. Update of IMO 2nd GHG study
Currently, UCL Energy Institute (led by Dr. Tristan Smith) along with a number of partners are working on updating the 2nd IMO GHG study in order to take into account the economic downturn experienced since 2008 and to create a reliable baseline on which future decisions regarding control of GHG emissions could be made. UCL’s contribution to the work is on the data and methods for the bottom-up quantifications of shipping’s emission intensity and emissions.
Low Carbon Shipping – A systems Approach
Low Carbon Shipping – A Systems Approach, is a research project that started in January 2010 funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (£1.7m initially funded for 3 years) and a number of industry partners. In addition to the research that will be undertaken at the five universities in the consortium, the project was supported by substantial in-house research and data from the consortium members from industry, NGO and government departments, including Shell, Maersk, Rolls Royce, BMT and Lloyds Register. ICCT Marine efficiency
Earlier this year UCL Energy Institute produced a report commissioned by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) titled ‘Assessment of shipping’s efficiency using satellite AIS data’, which provides detailed analysis of technical and operational efficiency and CO2 emissions across all international shipping vessels, using global satellite Automatic Identification System data on ship movement.
Collaboration with Carbon War Room on measurement methodology
UCL Energy Institute has been working with the Carbon War Room in its shipping operations to develop a methodology for assessing fuel savings for an innovative financing model, whereby multiple vessels could be upgraded with retrofit efficiency technology with tailored preferable finance and insurance in place to facilitate said retrofits for maximum scalability across the industry. UCL also hosted the Creating Climate Wealth Summit in 2011 and UCL Energy Institute provided subject matter expertise in the Shipping working track, which explored innovative finance, standards and information to overcome barriers and achieve large scale savings and drive new opportunities.
Collaboration with SSI on Financing and technology work streams
UCL Energy Institute has also been working with the Sustainable Shipping Initiative since its inception, providing technical expertise to the financing and technology work streams. Considerable research work was conducted (through secondment of PhD students) to enable the financing work stream to develop an innovative financing model that addresses the peculiar characteristics of the industry, such as the different types of charters which result in split incentives for energy efficiency investments.
